“Beauty & Chaos”
Intuition brings to a creative expression a total freedom that is too often clouded by the thought of an outcome. If this freedom is uninhibited, beauty is as undeniable as the chaos it creates. The mind, however, cannot exist in chaos for long and through its process of understanding the mind will transform one state of beauty into another.
My most recent works have been a journey into the unknown. I begin with two colors, usually contrasting, and a willingness to lose myself in the act of painting. The first marks made or the washing of a surface are arbitrary and impulsive and from this a seemingly chaotic composition to be balanced reveals itself. Thought then takes over and spontaneity gives way to consideration.
The diversity of works shown here are a representation of this practice. Even though all of these works were initiated in the same way the mind began to stray from symbolic imagery and found itself contemplating throughout the process what the paint was actually doing.
After several weeks of collaborating on “Discovery” with Jesse Tompkins we realized that through 3D glasses our painting took on a whole new life; a life dissimilar to that of other paintings seen through the same glasses. Shapes and lines of certain opacities and colors recede into the background creating further depth. Colors on the warmer end of the spectrum, the red, orange and yellow hues of different levels of transparency, float above the surface. It’s magic. It also turns out that this effect is called Chromadepth and is no new discovery. The color spectrum, when seen with binary optics, can be read from red to violet and closest in space to farthest. However, this explanation and demonstration through other works I have seen does not take into account transparency and opacity or the effects of overlapping. These are the realms to which exploration continues.
